  • Re-Read Proctor’s dialogue on p. 172 carefully.  Why would it be reasonable to conclude that Proctor is an independent thinker?
Re-Read lines 436 to 453 carefully.  How do dramatic conventions show that Reverend Hale’s arrival in the Proctor household creates a tense environment?

--As Proctor responds to Abigail’s insults about Elizabeth in lines 457 to 463, what do his words and the stage directions suggest about his view of his marriage?  Cite evidence to explain your response.
--Do you think that Hale will maintain his sensible attitude as the story unfolds?  Explain why, or why not.

--for after reading:  find a short phrase from the reading for each of the 3 Emotional Appeals
