Social Context – Circumstances

Naturalism – A
literary movement that focuses on how instinct and environment affect human
behavior. As an offshoot of realism,
naturalism shows common people and ordinary life accurately.
Tone – A writer’s
attitude towards his or her subject.
Tone is usually communicated through diction, choice of details, and
direct statements. Unlike mood, which
refers to the emotional response of the reader, Tone reflects the feelings of
the writer.
Inference – Coming
to a conclusion based on using reasoning to draw ideas from other information.

someone states one thing and means another.
Dramatic Irony – When
readers know more about a situation or character in the story than the characters do.
External Conflict - A
struggle between a character and nature, society, or another character.
