Common Assessment 11.4 Review Sheet

Social Context – Circumstances surrounding a story or what is happening in society when the story takes place

Naturalism – A literary movement that focuses on how instinct and environment affect human behavior.  As an offshoot of realism, naturalism shows common people and ordinary life               accurately. 

Tone – A writer’s attitude towards his or her subject.  Tone is usually communicated through diction, choice of details, and direct statements.  Unlike mood, which refers to the emotional response of the reader, Tone reflects the feelings of the writer.

Inference – Coming to a conclusion based on using reasoning to draw ideas from other information.

Directions: Based on the following statements, make an inference about what type of person each character is.

1)      As Johnny climbed out of his window at midnight, he remembered his promise to his mother to never sneak out._________________________________________________________________

2)      When the girl saw the police car, she immediately started running.________________________________________________________________________

Connotation – An idea or feeling that a word invokes in addition to its literal meaning

Denotation – the literal or, Dictionary definition of a word

Irony – A contrast between appearance and reality. 

                Situational irony – A contrast between what is expected to happen and what actually happens.

                Verbal irony – When someone states one thing and means another.

                Dramatic Irony – When readers know more about a situation or character in the story than the                                                                characters do.

External Conflict - A struggle between a character and nature, society, or another character.

Directions: Read the sentences below and decide if the external conflict is man vs man, man vs nature, or man vs society.

Evidence: American Eagle uses higher quality fabric, they offer a wider selection of sizes, their clothing is not as expensive
